Love and Equality: The Faces of Same-Sex Marriage

Massachusetts was the first state in the United States to legalize same-sex marriage, on May 17, 2004. In my series, Love and Equality: The Faces of Same-Sex Marriage, the portraits show same-sex couples living their lives just like opposite-sex couples do, in their own homes with their children and pets.

When I began to make these photographs, I considered the history of the traditional family portrait. I wanted to make reference to the conventions of this type of portraiture to help normalize my photos, since many people are not used to looking at imagery of same-sex couples. My hope is that getting to know these couples through portraits that feel familiar will illustrate that same-sex marriage poses no threat to traditional marriage, and that marriage equality is a right that all couples deserve. Since finishing this project, same-sex marriage has become legal across the United States due to a ruling by the Supreme Court and almost one million couples are legally married.
